Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are custom-made “caps” that are placed over damaged or decayed teeth to restore their size, shape, and function. Crowns can be made from materials like porcelain or ceramic and are used to protect teeth after root canals or to repair teeth with large fillings.
When Crowns are Needed:
- Severe Decay or Fractures: When a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a filling, a crown can provide structural support and protection.
- After Root Canal Treatment: Crowns are often placed on teeth after root canal therapy to protect the treated tooth from fracture reinfection.
- Cosmetic Improvements: Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of discolored or misshappen teeth.
Crowns are designed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces, making them long-lasting restorations. They are also made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, blending in seamlessly with your smile.
At Southern Maine Family Dental, we a pleased to offer same-day CAD/CAM crowns for most patients. Under some circumstances, you may not be a candidate. In this case, we will send a digital scan of your mouth to a dental laboratory to fabricate your new crown. We will see you back in our office within a couple of weeks to seat the final crown. In the meantime, you will likely have a temporary crown in place to protect the area.
